Hog barns near Waldorf knocked off foundations

WALDORF — Large hog barns east of Waldorf were knocked off their foundations and roofs were rolled up from one end to the other in a “micro downburst.”

The damage happened late Tuesday afternoon, exactly two years to the day when several hog barns on the site were destroyed by fire. The barns damaged Tuesday had just been rebuilt and filled with hogs this spring.

The operation is owned by New Fashion Pork, of Jackson. Additional information from New Fashion could not be obtained.

Waseca County Sheriff’s officials said it was the only damage reported in the county. The area also received about 3 inches of rain.

A microburst is a very localized column of sinking air that produces damaging straight line winds. They occur when air is warm and humid in the lower level but dry aloft. When thunderstorms develop, heavy rain evaporates into the dry air, cooling it and causing it to sink rapidly toward the ground.
