ST PETER — “Polar” aptly described this year’s Polar Bear Plunge Saturday. With temperatures in the single digits and windchills well below zero, plungers might have wanted to stay in the heated tent next to St. Peter’s Lake Hallett.

The opportunity to have fun and raise money for Special Olympics Minnesota drove more than 500 people to take the plunge, though some were a little apprehensive. Who could blame them when even spectators were bundled up against the icy wind?

The warm water of a nearby giant hot tub was a welcome reprieve from the lake’s chilly water and the long walk back up the hill as the breeze freeze-dried most plungers.
