MANKATO — Helen Louise Griffith, 85, of Mankato, died Monday, March 8, 2010 at North Point in North Mankato. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato. Interment will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-7 on Friday at Woodland Hills Funeral Home and will continue at the church 1 hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.
Helen was born March 17, 1924, in South Bend Township, Blue Earth County, MN to Joy and Anna (Hanel) Hoffmann. She attended Rush Lake Country School and graduated from Mankato High School.
Helen married Tom Griffith June 30, 1942 and they moved to the West Coast where Tom was employed in the shipyards returning to Mankato after World War II.
For many years, Helen owned Grandma’s Store in North Mankato. She was active in her church work with altar guild, Sunday school, library and OWLS. Other interests were Blue Earth Historical Society, Pages Past Book Store, Great Books Reading Group, MSU for Seniors. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and gardening.
She is survived by 2 sons and their wives, Allen and Sandy of Fairfax, VA, and Floyd and Riky of Mankato; 4 grandchildren, Jeff (Brenda) Griffith, Thea (Charles) Lillo, Krista Griffith, and Lauri (Barry) Huitema; 4 great-grandchildren, Chloe Griffith, Nicolas Lillo, Thomas Huitema, and Grace Huitema; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom in 1977, an infant brother and infant daughter, and her 2 sisters, Florence Fastrup and Dorothy Rengstorf.
