Lawrence H. Ireland

—   Lawrence H. Ireland, age 93 of Mankato, died on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato.

  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Burial will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, St. Clair. Landkamer Johnson Boman Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to MCHS-Mankato Hospice, or Oaklawn health Care Center.

  Lawrence was born on June 20, 1919 at his family home in Blue Earth County to Frank T. and Sarah (Smith) Ireland. He graduated from St. Clair High School in 1938 and attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul and Minnesota State University in Mankato. He also served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1946 in Great Lakes IL, California and Hawaii.

  He was united in marriage to Patricia King on June 4, 1949 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato. He farmed all his life in Decoria Township, Blue Earth County. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Clair where he taught CCD and was a lector and usher, as well as on the church board.

  He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Mankato Serra Club, American Legion, VFW, Flying Farmers, AOPA, St. Clair School Board, the Director for 12 years with Frost-Benco Wells Electric Co in Mankato, director of Catholic Rural Life, Farmers Union, Farm Bureau, Diocesan Pastoral Council, and Minn. Crop Improvement.

  He was a private pilot with a commercial license and IFR rating. He enjoyed flying, fishing, hunting, golf, playing bridge, traveling and dancing. He also enjoyed 4H work when he was young.

  Lawrence is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughters: Kathleen (Joseph) Kauffmann of Green Isle, Elizabeth (Rod) Hedberg of Chisago City and Susan (Ron) Jordan of Mankato; sons: John (Kristi) of Hamilton VA and Paul (Beth) of Big Lake; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a brother, Ralph of Mankato.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law: Frances Korth, Irene Briggs, Margaret McQuaid and Mary Ireland; and a niece, Mary Wiebold.
