Harlan Evans

—   Harlan Evans, age 82, of Mankato, died Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato.

  Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato, with Rev. John Petersen officiating. Interment will be in Minneopa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to Christ the King Lutheran Church, the American Heart Association, or the donor's choice.

  Harlan was born on April 8, 1930, in Judson Township, Blue Earth County. He was the son of David Lee and Ruth (Jones) Evans. Harlan was a 1948 graduate of Garden City High School and graduated from Mankato State University. He was united in marriage to Clarice Helgeson on November 5, 1950, in Tracy. Harlan was employed at the 7-Up Bottling Company in Mankato. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Amarillo, TX for four years and also as a civilian instructor for two years at the base. Harlan came back to Mankato, working for N.Y. Life Insurance and then was with Blue Earth County as Veterans Service Officer for 28 years. He retired in 1992.

  Harlan was known in their neighborhood as "the Walker". After heart surgery in 1992, he walked faithfully everyday in three sessions, at one time averaging nine miles a day. He was a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato, the American Legion Post #11, the D.A.V., and the Korean War Vets. Harlan enjoyed walking and being outdoors, watching sports, and working on small projects at home.

  Harlan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Clarice Evans of Mankato; two sons, Keith (Deb) Evans of Coon Rapids and Dean (Ann) Evans of North Mankato; two daughters, Patricia (Lee Haglund) Evans of Rochester and Kay (Todd) Hoffman of Mankato; eight grandsons and eight granddaughters; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Biddick of Brooklyn Center and Ellie (David) Salter of Camarillo, TX; also many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and four brothers, David, Kenneth, Allen, and Donald.
