John W. Edwards

—   Lifelong Mankato resident, John W. Edwards, age 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by family after facing a 2 and a half year battle with a brain tumor Saturday, July 21, 2012 at home.

  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Woodland Hills Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at Woodland Hills Funeral Home and will continue 1 hour before services at the chapel. Interment will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Memorials are preferred to Hospice or donor's choice.  

  John was born May 23, 1945 to William and Joyce (Knoss) Edwards in Mankato.

  After high school John proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1967 aboard the USS Coral Sea, Aircraft Carrier. He married Linda DeVlaeminck, September 7, 1968 at Centenary United Methodist Church. John worked at Northstar Concrete and then for Local 455 Pipefitters. He retired after 35 years. John loved fishing and hunting trips with his family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time at his lake home in Glenwood, MN and morning coffee with friends at Hy-Vee.

  John was a lifelong member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he was baptized, confirmed and married, MN Deer Hunters Association, DAV, VFW and Vietnam Last Mans Club. He is survived by his special friend, Sue Allen, son, Jason (Lisa Phillips) Edwards of Mankato; daughter, Kimberly (Jay) Groskreutz of Minnesota Lake; grandchildren, Jessica Phillips, Jacob Edwards, Brittany Groskreutz and Alissa Groskreutz; mother, Joyce Edwards of Mankato; sisters, Linda (Warren) Erdman of Lakeville, Jane (Ron) Staples of New Ulm; brother, Jerauld (Bea) Edwards of Mankato; sister in laws Roseanna (Rich) Melvin o Mankato, Jeanette McHone of Lexington KY, Phyllis Enz of North Mankato, Cathy (Jon) Schmidtz of Mankato, brother in law, Robert (Deb) DeVaeminick of Madison Lake and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his wife Linda in 1995, father, mother in-law, father in-law, 2 brother's in-laws, and 3 nephews.

  A special thank you to Hospice nurse Jenny and the West Team and also John's sister Linda Erdman who never left his side. John will be sadly missed by all, especially his best friend Bob Freeburg.
