Donald Ingvald Kelly, age 83, of Madelia and formerly of Butternut, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 18, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 24, 2012, at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, Butternut. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Thursday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Friday.
Don was born to Emil and Ida (Sandborg) Kelly, December 6, 1928, in rural Madelia. He grew up on the farm and attended school in a one-room school house. On completing his education, he began working for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He was drafted by the Army during the Korean War and upon his discharge he returned to the railroad for many years.
He married Janice "Jan" Evans of Minneapolis in 1957. They resided in Mankato until purchasing a farm in Butternut. They lived on the farm for 40 years where they raised their three children. He farmed, raised livestock, and attended many auctions. Don loved auctions and never found one he didn't enjoy. It was a full time hobby and he loved to spend time with his auction treasures. Don was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He also volunteered with the United Way. Playing cards was a favorite past time, and he also enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends. Most of all, he treasured the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren.
Don and Jan moved to Madelia in 2004. They say you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy. Don may have spent the last few years in town, but his heart remained on the farm in Butternut.
Don is survived by his wife, Jan; their three children and families, Kerry (Lisette) Kelly of Potomac Falls, VA and children, Meghan and Jason Kelly; Kevin (Debra) Kelly of Fairmont and children, Kolin and Kalyn Kelly, Tania (Mike) Fugazzi, James Donald JD Bowers, and Ashley Bowers; Kathy (Dennis) Marsh of Storden and children, Lucas, Mike, Matt, Eric, and James Marsh; one sister-in-law, Hilma Kelly; and many nephews and nieces.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Algot Nelson; two brothers, Marlow and Gordon Kelly; three sisters, Ilah Otto, Elsie Turbes, and Arlene Jacobsen; and four nephews.
