Richard Allen "Dick" Simmonds, resident of Sloan House at Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan, KS, died of natural causes on January 10, 2013. He was 86 years old. Mr. Simmonds was a lifelong resident of Minnesota until December 2011 when he moved to Kansas.
Dick was born in Mankato, MN, June 7, 1926, the son of Wesley Wilbur Simmonds and Zita Mary Monica (Reichel) Simmonds. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Simmonds, Mankato, MN, and his former son-in-law, Dennis Leisz, Hopkins, MN.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean Charlotte (Bofenkamp) Simmonds, of Sloan House, as well as six children: Daniel John Simmonds, and his wife, Nancy Simmonds, Ft. Wayne, IN; Michael Richard Simmonds, San Rafael, CA; Mary Elizabeth (Simmonds) Leisz, Hardeeville, SC; Kathleen Jean (Simmonds) Oldfather, and her husband, Michael Oldfather, Manhattan, KS; John Patrick Simmonds, and his wife, Tina Marie Simmonds, Elk River, MN; David Richard Simmonds, and his wife, Marie Simmonds, Honolulu, HI; and former daughter-in-law, Joy Zellers Simmonds, Corte Madera, CA. Other survivors include 14 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 nephew and 5 nieces, and his sister-in-law, Joanne Simmonds, Mankato, MN.
Dick is a graduate of Loyola High School, Mankato, MN, where he played football and baseball. He attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, and graduated from Mankato State Teachers College with a BS degree. He taught Math and Science for one year at Mapleton, MN, High School before beginning his life-long career in industrial chemical sales, working for Worum Chemical Co., Archer Daniel Midland Co., Cargill, and finally Sierra Paint Company in Hopkins, MN, which he co-owned and operated until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Simmonds served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and in the Naval Reserve from 1949 to 1959.
Besides his devotion to friends and family, Dick's passions included golfing, fishing, boating, reading the newspaper, and working crossword puzzles. He and Jean lived many winters in Naples, FL, after retirement, which brought him great joy. He was a life-long Catholic.
Dick will be cremated and a memorial service will be held in Mankato, MN, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Good Samaritan Fund at Meadowlark Hills in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
