Karl John Koppelman

  Karl John Koppelman, 70, died Sunday, December 9, 2012, at Benedictine Living Community of St. Peter, Minnesota.

  Karl was born to Leo C. and Mary Alice (Wendelschafer) Koppelman on January 24, 1942. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Minnesota. He continued to be an active member there and was especially fond of singing with the church choir. Karl moved to Benedictine Living Community of St. Peter after suffering a stroke in February 2007. He was well cared for and made many new friends with the staff. He especially liked participating in all of the varied activities.

  Karl attended the Faribault School for the Blind and Cleveland Public School where he graduated in 1961. Karl was not blessed with the gift of sight, but he was blessed in many other ways. He was especially gifted with his musical talents and song, which he shared with others at many community events and celebrations.

  Karl was a HAM radio enthusiast and active member of the Military Auxiliary Radio System (M.A.R.S.), who are licensed amateur radio operators that assist the military in providing emergency communications on a local, national, and international basis. He was also a member of HANDI-HAMS, a program sponsored by Courage Center that provided various means to support the physically challenged in the amateur radio community. To his amateur radio friends he was best known by his radio call letters WATFC.

  Karl was preceded in death by his father Leo C. in 1988 and his mother Mary Alice in 2011. He is survived by brothers Leo F. (Sandra), Cleveland; Kenneth (Lynda), Mankato; Dean (Mary), Cleveland, his Aunt June (Wendelschafer) Rindelaub, Marshall and several nieces and nephews.

  The family would prefer that memorials be designated to the Benedictine Living Community Activity Fund or Our Saviors Lutheran Church Sunday School.

  An 11:00 am funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 13th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 305 6th ST, Cleveland, MN, with Pastor Shelly Olson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church prior to the service beginning at 9:00 am. St. Peter Funeral Home - Klein Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
