Ervin J. "Buster" Verschoor, age 94 of Waterville, passed peacefully away on Monday, July 2, 2012, at District One Hospital, in Faribault.
Born in Hospers, IA on July 25, 1917, Buster was the son of Peter and Blanche (Wetmore) Verschoor. He grew up and attended school in Hospers, where his family ran a butcher shop and sausage factory. Following school, he worked at several jobs; his favorite was working for a dairy in St. Paul. He was drafted into the US Army in 1941, and was on the first ship to carry US troops to Europe. He served in Ireland and Scotland with the 34th Red Bull Division, and took part in the invasion of North Africa and the battle against Rommel. He later served in Tunisia, France and Italy.
Buster married Dorothy Tiede of Elysian on Sept. 14, 1944 while home on furlough. He worked for Elysian Auto for several years, then took over as manager of the Elysian Commander Elevator. Later, he managed the GTA elevators in Madison Lake and Janesville, and retired in 1982. He spent his whole career working with farmers and agriculture, and made many friends during his working life. He never forgot the names of his farmer friends, and remembered them fondly over the years. After retirement, Buster and Dorothy enjoyed traveling, and many happy years of retirement with friends in Elysian and Waterville. He loved his retirement job with the Elysian Enterprise, and the friends he made while working there. He enjoyed fishing, all sports, and was an avid fan of the Waterville Buccaneers. He was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran in Elysian, and a proud member of Legion Post #311 in Elysian for over 68 years.
Buster is survived by son David (Ruth Solyntjes) of Waterville; two granddaughters, Andrea of Winona and Jennifer (William Eddins) of Minneapolis, and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Florence (Bill) Kwickel of Sioux City, and two brothers, Anthony (Joanne) of Sioux City and Bernard (Judy) from Wynot, NE. He was preceded in death by both parents; Dorothy, his loving wife of 56 years; stepdaughter Nancy and husband Steve Gerth; sister Fern Bennett; brothers Mike, Bob and Kenneth; sister Anna; and grandson-in-law, Ted Foss.
Visitation will be held from 2-6 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Prosch-Dennis funeral home in Waterville, and will continue one hour before services on Monday.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 9, 2012 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elysian, with Rev. Russ Grabau officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Elysian. Memorials may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elysian.
