Mankato resident, Roy D. Nelson, age 84, died Thursday, August 9, 2012 at his home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church in Mankato. Interment will be in Wisconsin at a later date. The family will greet visitors at the church one hour prior to the church service.
Roy was born April 10, 1928 near Spider Lake in Hayward, Wisconsin to Nels and Lottie (Strait) Nelson. He graduated from Hayward High School and then served in the Army Air Force from 1946 to 1949. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a BS Degree in Fish and Wildlife Management, he worked for South Dakota Game Fish and Parks as a wildlife technician. During the summer and in the winter he traveled throughout the state checking pheasant populations. He did the same type of work near Hayward and in the northeast part of Wisconsin. On August 6, 1960 he married Karen Kranendonk. In 1961 he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and worked for the State as a Game Biologist. In 1967 he transferred to Mankato where he became an Area Wildlife Manager. After 30 years he retired in 1991. He was a deacon and elder in his church. After retirement he became a part-time driver for Flexible Plastics, and church custodian. He enjoyed reading the paper, working crossword puzzles, walking the dog, going out for coffee and watching the Green Bay Packers.
Roy is survived by his wife, Karen; children, Robert (Misty) Nelson of Tomah, WI, David Nelson of Mankato, Lynn (Tony) Adkins of Las Vegas; 6 grandchildren, Lori (Brent), Collin (Rachel), Cody, Derek, Tylere, and Mikayla; great grandchildren, Blake and June; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert, Fredrick, Bernard, and Lawrence and nephew, Nels.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Vine Faith in Action.
