Paul Arthur Melchior

— Paul Arthur Melchior, of The Villages Florida, formerly of Belle Plaine and Park Rapids Minnesota, died peacefully at home on January 6, 2013.   Paul was born July 2, 1927, to Peter and Clara Melchior in Belle Plaine, Minnesota.  He grew up and attended school there where he met his first wife Elverna "Ellie" Schmidt.  Paul served in the US Navy after high school then attended St Cloud State University in Minnesota where he earned a teaching degree in 1949.  Paul and Ellie married on June 18, 1949, and they moved west to South Dakota where Paul started his lifelong career in education as a teacher in Native American communities. Paul worked as an educator in many communities in South and North Dakota until 1968 when he accepted the position of Area Director of Education for the US Department of the Interior in Minneapolis where he worked until his retirement in 1979.

   Paul is survived by his second wife Phyllis Eix, children Jerome Melchior, Mary Ann (Chuck) Vermeersch, daughter-in-law Linda Melchior,  son-in-law Robert (Carrie) Elder, grandchildren Lucas Melchior, Alan (Jaime) Elder, Joe Elder (Lindsey Steege), Will Elder, great-grandson Charlie Elder, sister-in-law Gertie Melchior, step children Lenny Eix, Steve (Lori) Eix, Laurie (Perry) Melbo, Sharon (Don) Adams, step grandchildren Carrie,  Kimberly, EJ, Jed and Joseph Eix, Corey Melbo, Leah (Levi) Branstrom, Kelly, Kathryn and John Urbano, Jocelyn, Caleb and Parker Adams, step great-grandchildren Carter and Conner Branstrom and many nieces and nephews.

  Paul was preceded in death by his first wife Ellie, son Mark, daughter Paula (Melchior) Elder and step grandson Gabriel Adams.  A memorial service for Paul will be held in Belle Plaine Minnesota this spring with date and time to be shared at a later date.
