Mabelle P. Larson

MANKATO — Memorial service for Mabelle P. Larson, 96, of Mankato, formerly of Canton, S.D., will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Old Main Village in Mankato. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 15, at the Canton Lutheran Church in Canton, S.D., with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will follow at the Canton Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Mabelle passed away Tuesday evening, March 9, 2010, at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato.

Mabelle Pernella (Hagen) Larson was born on September 19, 1913, on a farm near Alcester, S.D., to Carl and Nettie (Asper) Hagen. She attended the Cole country school and then the Augustana Academy High School in Canton, graduating in 1932. After graduating, Mabelle moved to Minneapolis and worked at the Higgins Hospital for a couple of years. On August 14, 1935, she was united in marriage to Floyd A. Larson, the son of Frank and Annie Larson. They lived and farmed the Larson Farm, west of Inwood, IA. They had two daughters, Joloyce Ann and Jane Eileen. In addition to farming, Mabelle worked for several years at Wegener’s Clothes Shop and Canton Apparel. In 1983 they sold the farm and moved to Canton. Floyd passed away on May 31, 1987.

Floyd and Mabelle enjoyed many years and great experiences in the Sons of Norway as charter members of the Kong Olav 5th #483 Lodge in Canton. She loved to travel throughout North America and also made two trips to visit family and friends in Norway. She had been a member of the Canton Lutheran Church since 1935 and was active in numerous church activities including youth groups, women’s organizations and coordinating wedding and funeral receptions. Next to God, Mabelle’s greatest joy was her family. She took great delight in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and being a part of their lives. She was an exceptional grandma and took great pride in her grandchildren’s achievements. To be closer to them, she moved to Old Main Village in Mankato, MN, in 2001. She so loved the life, activities and friendships she made there. She became an associate member at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. In 2006, she moved to Oak Lawn Health Care Center. In addition to family, she filled her life with many activities including square dancing, bowling, golf, bridge and cheering on her Minnesota Twins. A special passion for Mabelle was volunteering in her community. This was highlighted by her service through R.S.V.P, Senior Citizen Programs, and her special time with the youngest students at E.O. Lawrence Elementary School.

Left to love, honor and cherish her memory are one daughter, Joloyce Falgren of Mankato, MN; five grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, Jed Falgren and his wife, Lisa, and their children, Brianna, Kelly, Abby, and Joey, of Mankato, MN; Rick Johnson and his wife, Gayle, and children, Amber, Emily and Adam, of Spencer, IA; Jill Hewitt and her husband, Steve, and their children, Jenna and Daniel of North Mankato, MN; Cyndi Johnson and her husband, Brad, and their children, Matthew, Nickolas, Thomas and Andrew, of Fairmont, MN; Daron Johnson and his wife, Laurie, and their children, Nathan, Tyler, and Sophie, of Fairmont, MN; one sister, Doris Carlson and her husband, Kenneth, of Alcester, S.D.; sister-in-law, Bonnie Hagen of Alcester, S.D.; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Floyd Larson, Mabelle was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Johnson; son-in-law, Jon Falgren; five brothers, Arlo, Noble, Norman, Lawrence and Carlyle Hagen; three sisters, Lillian Olson, Elsa Saugstad and Opal Gullickson.

Special thanks for the loving care she received from the staff at Oaklawn Health Care Center, to her faithful friend Catherine Buchl, and for the countless expressions of love from her friends and family over the years.

Memorials are preferred to Canton Lutheran Church, Son’s of Norway Scholarship Fund, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, ISJ Hospice or donor’s choice.
