Donald W. "Dubs" Frederickson, 89, of Mankato, formerly of Hanska, died Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Immanuel St. Josephs - Mayo Health System in Mankato.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska with Rev. Aaron Suomala Folkerds officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Donald Walton Frederickson, the son of Fred and Ingeborg (Gudvangen) Frederickson, was born May 16, 1922 in Lake Hanska Township where he spent his youth and attended country school. He farmed for a time after graduating from Hanska High School in 1940. Dubs entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served as a Signal Man 2nd Class. He served on Iwo Jima the first eight days of the campaign and received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (Two Stars) and the World War II Victory Medal. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Dubs returned to Hanska. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Broste May 25, 1946 at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church. Together, the couple farmed in Lake Hanska Township.
Dubs enjoyed time spent with family and friends, hunting, fishing, reading, sports, especially baseball and hockey, and politics. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska. In March 2011, Dubs and Myrtle moved to Pathstone Assisted Living in Mankato.
Survivors include his wife Myrtle Frederickson of Mankato; children Dianne Osborne (Richard) of Mankato, Keith Frederickson of Hanska, Paulette Nelson (Dennis) of Good Thunder, Steve Frederickson (Sue) of Blue Earth, Doreen Culnane (Ed) of Lake Stevens, WA, Fred Frederickson (Connie) of Oshkosh, WI, David Frederickson of New Ulm; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Pearl Frederickson of Anchorage, AK; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by brothers Ferdinand, Otto, George and Elmer Frederickson; sisters Alpha Olson and Ingeborg Warner; brothers-in-law Everett Olson and Ivan Warner; and sisters-in-law Cora, Elva and Florence Frederickson.
Memorials are preferred to the American Red Cross or to the Salvation Army.
