Michael Joseph Brosnan, age 65, of Fairfax, VA, formerly of Mankato, MN, died on Saturday, February 2, 2013.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 9th in Mankato with a visitation for family and friends at 1:00 PM at the Woodland Hills Funeral Home & Chapel. Michael, the son of Bert H. and Gloria B. (Warren) Brosnan, was born September 13, 1947, the second of twelve brothers and sisters. Mike attended Sts. Peter and Paul Grade School and graduated from Loyola High School in 1965 in Mankato.
While attending the University of Minnesota, Mike met Shelley Malkin of Iron River, MI. The couple was wed December 18, 1970 before Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving until 1973.
Mike returned to the U of M to pursue a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering; achieved in 1976.
Mike and Shelley moved out to California to work in the aerospace industry, while living in Culver City, CA, from 1976-1994. The teams that included Mike at the North American Aircraft Division of Rockwell put him in the middle of the research and development of several key military planes and jets, including the B-1 Lancer bomber, the F-35 fighter jet, the X-31 jet, and the X-29 jet (displayed in the Smithsonians National Air and Space Museum).
Mike took pride in his engineering accomplishments, but it was his wife and two children Catie and Matthew that he bragged about the most. His best friends, Peg and Ted Muelhaupt, were at the Brosnans side from California to Virginia, where Mike then found contract work for the military, mostly in software development for the space industry.
Mike enjoyed hiking and biking, and accepted the challenges of playing guitar, running the tennis court, keeping his yard and pool free of debris, and remaining a Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan.
Mike might well be remembered for his guttural laugh and rarely changing political opinions and maybe the cock of his head. Family and friends, whom he loved, can attest to all his love of sports and politics, tramping Civil War battlefields, eclectic music, reading, and family. Some say a wedding or a holiday is not official unless Mike was present. Now he will always be there---in our hearts.
Left to cherish Mikes memory are his wife Shelley (Malkin) Brosnan, children Catie of Brooklyn, NY, and Matthew of Oakland, CA, Mikes mother Gloria Brosnan of Mankato, MN; siblings, Steve and Mary Ann Brosnan of Algona, IA, Mary Brosnan-Sorensen and Errol Sorensen of Greenfield, MA, Mark and Marcia Brosnan of Mankato, MN, Cheryl and John Weingartz of North Mankato, MN, Brian Brosnan of Apple Valley, MN, Donna and Rick Litchfield of West Mankato, MN, Jeanne and Robert Willaert of Mankato, MN, Janice and Bill Kingsbury of Conshohocken, PA, and Anne and Dan McCargar of Mankato, MN, uncle and aunt Bob and Nan Warren of Chaska, MN; sister-in-laws Gillian Krieger of Northbrook, IL, and Roberta LeClair of Milwaukee, WI; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Catherine Warren, Edward and Ethel Brosnan, his father Bert Herrick Brosnan, his older sister Barbara Lynn (Brosnan) Reffitt, nephew Andrew John McCargar in infancy, father-in-law Abraham Jimmy Malkin and mother-in-law Sarah Sally Malkin.
