Erwin Joseph Suess

—    Erwin Joseph Suess, Age 85, of Mankato and formerly of Hanska, died peacefully on Friday, November 9.

  A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 13 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with Rev. John Kunz and Deacon Jim Guldan (nephew) officiating. Interment will be at New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday November 12 from 4 -8 pm, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm, and continues from 7:30-10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

  Erwin Joseph Suess was born Aug. 2, 1927, to Joseph and Dora (Utz) Suess.  He was united in marriage to Monica Spaeth on June 3, 1947 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan.  They were married 63 years before the sudden passing of his loving wife Monica on 10-31-10.  Erwin farmed near Hanska and did trucking on the side.  In 1969 he started his own band "Erwin Suess and the Hoolerie Dutchmen", and in 1976 became desk clerk for Farmland Industries in Mankato.  In 1986, Erwin was awarded the Minnesota Polka Band of the Year. He was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame and the World Concertina Congress Hall of Fame in 2003.  Music brought Erwin great joy and he loved sharing it with others through his release of numerous recordings and by performing for many weddings, anniversaries, music festivals and ballroom dances.  His legacy of music lives on in the musical talents of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Erwin also loved playing cards with his many friends and family.  He was a member of the Catholic Aid Assn. and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Board for the Farmer's Co-op of Hanska, Linden Township Board, and Musicians Union Local 513.  

  He is survived by daughters, Linda (Gary) Gleisner, Susan (Robert) McAdams, Loriann (Troy) Parsons; sons Duane (Denise) Suess, Loran (Chris) Suess, and daughter-in-law Sandy Suess; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Delores Guldan; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sylvester (Delores) Spaeth, Alois (Margaret) Spaeth, Wilfred (Theresa) Spaeth, Loretta (Arthur) Simon, Lucille (Armin) Losleben.  He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Monica, beloved son David, brothers-in-law; Dennis Guldan, Felix Spaeth, Harold Schugel, Herbert Fischer, and sisters-in-law Antoinette Schugel and Irene Fischer. Also godchildren Alan Spaeth, Rick Losleben and Bob Simon.
