NORTH MANKATO —
David F. Kain, age 74, of Minnesota Lake, MN, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the Minneapolis Veterans Association Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church of Danville Township, rural Minnesota Lake, MN. Visitation will be Monday, April 16, 2012, from 4-7 p.m. at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Rev. Michael Mathews will officiate and burial will take place in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Minnesota Lake American Legion and the Wells Color Guard. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells is assisting the family with arrangements.
David F. Kain was born August 24, 1937 in Danville Township, Blue Earth County, MN, the son of Frederick and Margaret (Klinder) Kain. He graduated from Bethany College High School in Mankato in 1955 and entered into the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes, IL in January of 1956. He went to school at Port Hueneme, CA, and served as a Construction Electrician on Kwajalein, Okinawa, and was honorably discharged in December of 1959. He re-entered the service in March of 1962 and served in Adak, Alaska; Okinawa; Thailand; Sasebo, Japan; Spain; Crete; and 26 months in Viet Nam at Chu Lai, Saigon, Danang, and Ha Tien. He was Homeported at Port Hueneme, CA and Gulfport, MS. He taught Electricians School at Davisville, RI and Port Hueneme, CA, retiring on October 27, 1977, as a Construction Electrician Chief Petty Officer. Throughout his military career, he earned the following awards: Combat Action Ribbon; 3 Navy Unit Commendations; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Combat Readiness ribbon (Battle E); 3 Good Conduct Awards; National Defense; Viet Nam Service Medal with FMF insignia and 6 Operations stars; Viet Nam meritorious Unit Commendation with Gallantry Cross; Viet Nam Campaign Medal; Rifle and Pistol Sharpshooter ribbons; and the Seabee Combat Warfare Insignia.
After retiring from the Navy he worked for Mankato Electric as a motor and appliance repairman for about 15 years, then for Midwest Electric for 2 years, then Mankato Electric until retiring in 2001. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time with nieces, nephews and family.
David is survived by brother Dale (Elaine) Kain of Inver Grove Heights, MN; sisters: Mary (John) Arvila of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Mae (Steven) Hanson of North Mankato, MN; special friend Barbara Turner of Broken Arrow, OK; nieces and nephews: Dawn Alger, Denise Alexander (Darren Wandersee), Darren (Jodi) Kain, Noel (Nancy) Arvila, Melanie (Henry) Arvila-Medrano, Jesse Hanson, Jason Hanson (Jenny St. Peter), Aaron Hanson, and Kyle Hanson; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
