Richard Vern Thompson, 64, of Springfield, MO, formerly of Mankato, died December 1, 2012, at Manorcare Health Facility in Springfield, after a long brave battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday December 22, 2012, at Woodland Hills Funeral Chapel with Pastor Chad Cziscke. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park.
Richard was born August 28, 1948, to James and Betty (Rader) Thompson in Mankato. He attended Mankato High School where he was an all state gymnast and Mankato State College. On June 10, 1971, he was united in marriage to Julie Thompson at First Lutheran Church in Columbia Heights. Richard served in the United States Air force from November 1968 - November 1974. Richard was a black belt in Judo and taught self defense. He worked as a lifeguard at Tourtellete Pool and as a lineman at Excel Energy for over 20 years. In his free time Richard enjoyed, fishing, hunting, archery, reading, westerns, singing, dancing, puzzles, and birding.
He is survived by; son, Andrew Thompson of Duluth: daughter, Jennifer (Ricky) Rustman of Minnesota Lake; grandchild, Devin Phat; and father, James Thompson of Springfield, MO.
Richard is preceded in death by daughter, Kristi, mother, Betty, wife, Julie, and grandparents.
