George A. Johnston

—   George A. Johnston, formerly of Mapleton and North Mankato, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI.

  He was born Feb. 8, 1932, to Philip and Daisy (Murray) Johnston in Wall, S.D. His family moved to Mapleton where he went to high school and played on the schools basketball team. George served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Marit True in 1958 and they had four children. George barbered for many years at Northside Barbers on Cross Street in North Mankato. He also lived and barbered in Spring Grove, MN for several years. He worked for 20 years at Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse, WI. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, walking, playing bingo and rooting for the Vikings.

  Survivors include his wife, Doris of Stoddard, WI; son, Mark of La Crosse, WI; two daughters, Nancy (Jim) Reasor of Eagle Lake; Kathy (Webb) Steiner of Mankato; seven grandchildren, Shara Reasor-Heard (Jason) of Vancouver, WA, Scott Reasor of Eagle Lake, Tyler Johnston of Mankato, Hailey Johnston of Eagle Lake, Zach Steiner of Minneapolis, and Bret and Jared Steiner of Mankato; two brothers, Philip (Miriam)  of Red Wing, MN; Frank (Barbara) of Kingston, NY; sister-in-law, Patricia Johnston of St. Louis Park, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

  George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marit; his daughter, Carolyn; his brother, Burt; and his nephew, Michael.

Funeral services and burial were October 1st in Stoddard, WI at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran

Church.
