Mara Lynn Meisel Jewell was born June 25, 1956, in St. Charles, MO. Her earthly journey ended December 27, 2012, in San Antonio, TX, after a long illness from cancer.
Mara's family moved to Mankato in 1958. Her school years were spent at Jefferson, Washington, and Wilson Campus School. She was active in school and community plays during this time. She also was involved in various musical groups, and in gymnastics in high school and college.
In 1980, Mara joined the United States Army and completed intelligence training, then was stationed abroad. During this time, she met and married Fred Lee Jewell, also a member of the U.S. Army. Mara was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster).
After her Army career, Mara raised her children, Louis and Katra, mostly in the New Hampshire area. Later, Mara moved to San Antonio and joined the First Unitarian Universalist Church, where she served on many committees and sang in the church choir.
Mara was preceded in death by her grandparents, Louis and Eva Meisel of St. Louis, MO, and Roy and Gertrude Wilkerson of Joplin, MO.
She is survived by her mother and father, Burton and Patsy Meisel, children Louis and Katra Jewell, grandchildren Madison and Haley Jewell, sisters Karon (Raymond)Sandberg, and Charla (Jeffrey) Eccles, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Mara's life will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 12, at 1:30 PM, simultaneously with a celebration of her life held in San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or donor's choice.
