Marvin Carl Bindig, age 88, of Good Thunder, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on that date.
Funeral Service will be held 1:30 p.m., Sunday, February 5, 2012, at Grace Lutheran, Mankato. Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m., Saturday at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Sunday. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Good Thunder, at a later date. Memorials are preferred to Grace Lutheran Church of Mankato, St. John Lutheran Church of Good Thunder, or an organization of the donor's choice.
Marvin was born December 28, 1923, in Rapidan Township, Blue Earth County, the only child of Carl Robert II and Alma Lydia (Hoke) Bindig. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Good Thunder. He graduated from Rapidan High School in 1942. On November 24, 1950, he married Elaine Ruth Olson, and they resided in North Mankato until they were divorced in 1990. Despite their divorce, they continued to have a close relationship with each other right up until the time of his death. As a young boy, Marvin had to learn to help run the family farm as his father spent most of Marvin's younger years as a post-WWI patient in the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital. Marvin became a self-taught "jack of all trades" and could do or fix just about anything. He designed and built the family home in North Mankato, and was the person everyone went to when they needed something repaired. Over the years, Marvin worked on the farm, worked for J.R. Watkins Company, and worked for Kato Engineering for 28 years until his retirement in 1989. His family lovingly refers to him as a "cat with nine lives" having survived two types of cancer, a stroke, and open heart surgery over the years. This recent car accident proved to be an insurmountable obstacle and his family finds comfort in the fact that his strong religious beliefs have resulted in a heavenly reunion for him.
Marvin is survived by his former wife, Elaine of Mankato; five children, Marcia (Daniel) Dahle of Owatonna, Beverly Bindig of Good Thunder, Barbara Jans of Loveland, CO, Bradley (Theresa) Bindig, and Karl Robert Bindig, III, both of Good Thunder; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and many friends.
