— Gordon H. Herbst



  Gordon Henry Herbst, age 82, of rural Mankato, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at his home.

 Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. with a 6 p.m. prayer service, TODAY, March 14, 2013, at Mankato Mortuary. Burial will be at a later date.

 Gordon Henry was born March 21, 1930, to Paul and Hazel (Swanson) Herbst in Mankato.  He graduated from Mankato High School and then the University of Minnesota.  Gordon served for the United States Army from 1951 until 1952 when he was honorably discharged.  Gordon was employed by the University of Minnesota for several years and then LCM Pathologists in Mankato.  He loved the outdoors, studying trees and plants, and watching birds.  Gordon was a Certified Master Gardener and was very involved with Friends of Minneopa and helping with Minneopa State Park.  He had written books on the history of Minneopa State Park.  Gordon was a well respected, good natured, lovable man who will be missed by all who knew him.

 Gordon is survived by his first cousins: Clarence Herbst of Lake Crystal and Mildred Kvam of Mankato; and numerous second cousins.
