James G. 'Jim' Smith

—    James G. "Jim" Smith, age 83, died on Friday, August 10, 2012 at his home in Waterville.

  Born in Saxon, Wisconsin on October 3, 1928, Jim was the son of Tell and Mary (Organist) Smith.  Growing up he lived in Northern Wisconsin where he attended school in Saxon before graduating from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife conservation and biology.  On June 25, 1955 Jim married Beverly Trembley in Saxon.  He served his country as a field photographer during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force as Staff Sergeant.  Over the years he worked as a photographer for Gehl Co. in West Bend, WI, as a service manager for OMC in Owatonna, MN, and as a field engineer for AMP, Inc.  He was a wonderful father to his children, and he loved his life on the lake with his family.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting, gardening, and photography, and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Waterville.

  Jim is survived by his wife, Beverly Smith of Waterville; two children, Cindy (Kim) Backhaus of Kewaskum, WI, and Todd (Elizabeth) Smith of Raleigh, NC; two granddaughters, Melissa (Dustin) Collett of West Bend, WI, and Kristy Backhaus and her special friend Mike Held of Hartford, WI; three siblings, Craig (Dorothy) Smith of Pierre, SD, John (Kathy) Smith of Westminster, CO, and Karen Jones of Monterey, CA; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and friends.  He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dawn Smith; siblings, David, Gloria, Shirley, and LaCarda; and his parents and grandparents.

  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Waterville, with Rev. Michael Ince officiating.  Visitation will be held for one hour before the service at the church.  Prosch-Dennis Funeral Home in Waterville is handling the arrangements.
