—   Jean J. McCarthy, 82, of Side Lake, MN, passed away on May 16, 2012.

  Burial arrangements are being handled by Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing, MN, with a family only

Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing, MN.

  Jean was born in St. Paul, MN, to Dr. Joseph and Florence McCarthy on Sept. 11, 1929.  After graduating from Cretin High School and the University of Minnesota, Jean then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954.  Jean continued his life-long journey in formal education by earning his Master's degree from Washington State University and then taught at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL.

  Returning to Minnesota in 1962, Jean taught at Minnesota State University-Mankato until his retirement as a full professor in 1991.  During that time, Jean also earned his PhD from the University of Minnesota.  

  During his tenure at Minnesota State University, Jean coached baseball for 15 years, developing a winning baseball program that earned him induction into the MNSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Jean also held memberships in several professional organizations and honorary societies; was published with a book and professional articles; received awards for coaching success and teaching excellence; was named to American Mensa, Who's Who in America, The Outstanding Educators in America; and earned the Minnesota State University-Mankato Outstanding Faculty Award.  Jean also was a member of the Governor's Physical Fitness Advisory Committee.  

  Jean was an active member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Duluth, MN, and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing, MN, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus.

  Jean is survived by his wife, Norma (Shermer), three children-Patrick McCarthy, of Portland, OR, Anne (Thomas) Dutton of Waleska, GA and Kevin (Hallie) McCarthy of Prescott, WI; four grandchildren-Daniel, Adrienne, Matthew, and Michael; one sister-Joanne McCarthy of Eveleth, MN; and one brother-Joseph McCarthy of N. St. Paul, MN.
