Barton Edward Bluhm, age 81, of Waldorf, departed this life on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born on September 3, 1931, in Waldorf, Minnesota, he was the son of Edward and Evelyn (Voigtlander) Bluhm. He grew up in Waldorf and was baptized on September 20, 1931, and confirmed on June 18, 1944, at First Lutheran Church in Waldorf. He graduated from Waldorf High School in 1949 and the University of Minnesota-St. Paul in 1952. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until 1954. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to work at the family livestock business and farming. He married Diane Lortis on May 18, 1958, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waseca. He was later employed by Custom Farm Services in Pemberton, Herters Inc. in Waseca and later managed ARCO Farm Services in Matawan. He returned to school and graduated from South Central Technical College with studies in Commercial Refrigeration and Appliance Repair. Following graduation, he was employed by All Seasons Arena and retired after 17 years. Most recently he enjoyed working on minor repair jobs at home and in the village.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, spectator sports, and was a former player on the US Army Baseball Team. He also took special delight in his granddaughters and great granddaughters. He was a life member of First Lutheran Church in Waldorf where he served in various church offices. He was a member of American Legion Post 587 in Waldorf, was a retired volunteer firefighter and a former member of the Waldorf City Council.
He is survived by his wife, Diane of Waldorf; three children, Lisa and Todd Gray of San Francisco, CA, Stacy Bluhm of Plymouth, and Justin Bluhm and fiance, Stacy Thompson and her children, Rylee and Reagan of Mankato; three grandchildren, Chelsey Bluhm, Toni Bluhm, and Emma Gray; and two great grandchildren, Alexis and Madison Smith. He is also survived by siblings, Ardis and Richard Johnson of Madelia, Joan Bluhm of Bloomington, and Robert and Joyce Bluhm of Effingham, IL; brother-in-law, Archie "Buzz" and Bernie Lortis of St. Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sheila Peterson and Beverly Bluhm; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Waldorf with Rev. Michael Mathews officiating. Burial will follow at First Lutheran Cemetery.
