John Fred Hrdlicka

—   John Fred Hrdlicka, age 90 of Waterville, passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 21, 2012.

  Born in Elysian on November 1, 1921, John was the son of Florence Hrdlicka.  He attended school in Elysian and Waterville, and graduated from Waterville High School.  Following his graduation, Fred served during World War II with the United States Army, and was stationed in Southern Italy and North Africa.

  After his honorable discharge, he attended the Minnesota School of Business.  Fred was married to Geraldine Biggins on May 15, 1950 in Elysian.  He worked for the Bank of Waterville before opening his own business, Dressel Insurance Agency.  For many years he assisted his community by selling insurance, doing income taxes and bookkeeping, and selling real estate.

  Fred enjoyed woodcarving, bowling, fishing, gardening, golf, and watching sports on television -baseball being his favorite.  He was an avid Twins fan, a former player for the Waseca Braves, and had been invited to play for the Minneapolis Millers before enlisting in the army.  Fred and his wife were long time members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Waterville, and he spent many hours volunteering with the Knights of Columbus, Meals on Wheels, and Santa Anonymous.

  Fred is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine Hrdlicka; six daughters, Nancy (Ray) Miller of Waseca, Peggy Jewison of Mankato, Jayne Wohl of Hopkins, Mary (Stewart) Miller of Waseca, Beth Nelson of Rochester, and Maureen Cerwinske (special friend Paul Balfe) of Mankato; eighteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Chester (Helen) Hrdlicka of Elysian and Alan Hrdlicka of Mankato.  He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.

  Visitation will be held from 2-5 PM on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at the Prosch-Dennis Funeral Home in Waterville, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, August 27, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Waterville, with Rev. Michael Ince officiating.  Interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Waterville.
