Eugene D. Evan, age 83, longtime barber of Wells, MN, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Parkview Care Center in Wells, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells, MN. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 4-7 PM at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Father Thomas Niehaus will officiate and burial will take place in St. Casimir Cemetery in Wells, MN. Military Honors will be accorded by Wells Color Guard.
Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells is assisting the family with arrangements. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Casimir Catholic Church and School.
Mr. Evan was born Oct. 29, 1928 in Minnesota Lake Township, Faribault County, to Stephan P., Jr. and Balbina (Maday) Evan. He attended Public School in Minnesota Lake. From Dec. 6, 1950 until his honorable discharge on Nov. 22, 1952 he served in the U.S. Army as a CPL and was a Korean War Veteran. He received the Korean Service medal with 2 Bronze Campaign Stars and a United Nations Service Medal. He lived in Minnesota Lake where he worked as a carpenter. On June 30, 1953 he was united in marriage to Joyce E. Hawker at St. Teresa Catholic church in Mapleton, MN. In 1954 he went farming with his brother until 1960 when he moved to Mapleton, MN. On April 26, 1961 he went to Lee School of Barbering in St. Paul. After graduation he worked in the Mapleton Shop. He then went to work in the Albert Lea Shop until Feb. of 1965. In 1965 he bought the Wendt Barber Shop in Wells, changed the name to Evan's Barber Shop and ran the place until he retired in 2008. Eugene was a member of the American Legion Post 210 and a Life Member of VFW Post 1778. He was Post Commander from 1970-1971 and Quartermaster for over 21 years.
Eugene is survived by his wife Joyce of Wells; 3 daughters: Therese Evan (Julie David) of Rochester, Deborah Hendrickson of Winona, and Mary (Kevin) Lesto of Wells; 2 sons: Joseph (Deb) Evan of Rochester, and Thomas (Wendy) Evan of Rochester; 12 grandchildren: Angie (Chris) Jones, Christine (Mike) Hasselman, Vicki (Becky) Evan, Candi Evan, Alex Evan, Nathan Evan, Elizabeth Evan, Jocelyn Lesto, Grant Lesto, Gage Lesto, Dylan (Kristi) Hendrickson, and Brittany Hendrickson; 3 great-grandchildren: Tyler Jones, Orion Hendrickson and Benjamin Evan. He is also survived by brother David (Ann) Evan of Albany, OR; sister Alvina "Sis" (Roger) Giese of Albert Lea; sister-in-law Jean Evan of Minnesota Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James.
