Adelgunde Frieda Schaller (nee Pieper), age 101, was called to her eternal home on November 16, 2012. "Gunde" was born on July 23, 1911, in Yellow Medicine County, Echo,
Minnesota, the second of six children of Rev. John and Lydia (nee Hoenecke) Pieper. Gunde was baptized by her father at Friedenskirche on August 13, 1911, and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minnesota, on April 13, 1924, also by her father. She graduated from Bethany Lutheran High School in Mankato, Minnesota in 1929, and from the University of Minnesota in 1936, with a degree in Chemistry. Later in 1936 she began teaching Chemistry and Girls' Physical Education at Bethany Lutheran High School and College, and also taught swimming for young business girls in the Mankato area. In 1941 Gunde met her future husband, Hilbert Schaller, who was hired at Bethany as Dean of Men while she was Dean of Women. They were married in Stillwater, Minnesota, on June 17, 1942, at Salem Lutheran Church, her father again officiating. Shortly after this Hilbert was ordained into the ministry and they moved to Glencoe (Town Helen), Minnesota, where their first four children were born. Hilbert's ministry took them to Loveland, Colorado; Plymouth, Nebraska; and finally back to Mankato. Hilbert died in Rochester, Minnesota, on May 28, 1957. By this time there were six children and Gunde returned to teaching. She taught high school at Nicollet, Minnesota, and Kindergarten at Immanuel Lutheran Grade School in Mankato before receiving the call to teach at Immanuel Lutheran High School (then in Mankato, Minnesota) beginning in 1959 and continuing until her retirement from Immanuel Lutheran College (then in Eau Claire, Wisconsin) in May, 2000, at the age of 89. At retirement she was head librarian.
Besides her husband, Gunde is preceded in death by her daughter, Judith (Robert) Voss, her parents, and her sisters Caecilie Pieper, Ingeborg Pieper (twin), and Lydia Janzow. She is survived by five children: Miriam (Robert) Nestler of Topeka, Kansas; Althea (William) Sell of St. Paul, Minnesota; Deborah (William) Perry of Houston, Texas; Peter (Melanie) Schaller of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; Andrea (Matthias) Borck of Houston, Texas; one sister: Zita Broetzmann of Menomonie, Wisconsin; one brother: John (Julie) Pieper of Crosslake, Minnesota; fifteen grandchildren and twenty four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
A victory service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2015 N. Hastings Way, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, at 1:00PM on Saturday, December 1, 2012, with 1 hour to visit prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred for Messiah Lutheran Church or Immanuel Lutheran College, both of Eau Claire, WI.
