Melvin Meyer

Gibbon — Melvin “Mel” Meyer, 90, of Gibbon died Monday, April 6, 2009, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 AM Thursday, April 9, 2009, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Moltke Township, Sibley County, with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor David Radtke will officiate. Visitation will be 4 - 8 PM Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Thursday.

Mel is survived by his wife, Bernetta Meyer of Gibbon; a sister-in-law, Deloris Marquardt of Gibbon; a niece, Edith (Lester) Ulrich of Savage; nephews, Ronald C. (Mary Kay) Kiecker of Gibbon, Chris Marquardt of Minneapolis, Darrel Rettig of Glencoe; great-nephews, Jeff (Melissa) Rettig of Gibbon, Jason (Constance) Rettig of Gibbon; great-nieces, Roshelle (Trevor) Roth of Burnsville, Cassie Kiecker of Gibbon, Ashley Kiecker of Gibbon, Sarah Ulrich of Savage, Rachel (Brett) Melberg of Eden Prairie; great-great-nieces, Jordan Rettig and Alexis Rettig both of Gibbon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna and Earl Kiecker, Ella and Clarence Kiecker; and a nephew, Leon Rettig and his wife Marlys.

Melvin Henry Meyer, the son of Theodore and Emma (Wilking) Meyer was born on September 21, 1918, on the home farm in Moltke Township, Sibley County. He attended District #60 Country School in Moltke Township and then parochial school at St. Peter’s Lutheran School. On June 20, 1945, Mel was united in marriage to Bernetta Berg at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Auburn. After marriage, they farmed his families farm in Moltke Township, Sibley County until moving to Gibbon in 1984. Farming was Mel’s passion in life. He and Bernetta loved to travel going on a Mediterranean Cruise and traveling to Russia, Germany, South America, Alaska and Las Vegas were some of the other places they visited. He was a life long member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where he served in positions such as elder, trustee, and usher. He had served on the Gibbon Elevator board for 21 years, four of them as president, was a member of the Gibbon Lions Club, co-founder of the Moltke Happy Hustlers, and participated in the plays at church. His hobbies were playing cards, especially Sheephead, listening to old time music, dancing, watching baseball and hunting. Mel will be missed by all those that knew him.
