Mary J. Spies, age 81 of Waseca, died on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 19th at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca with Fr. Marty Schaefer, Celebrant. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery.
The Spies Family will greet friends on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at McRaith Funeral Home in Waseca, and will continue on Monday afternoon for one hour prior to services, at church. There will be a 5:30 Catholic Daughter Rosary, and a 6:00 parish prayer service, Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.
Mary Jean was born on September 23, 1928, in Waseca, Minnesota to Leo and Emma (Riegler) Collins. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1946, and went on to attend business school. She was united in marriage to Henry Robert Spies on November 9, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca. Mary and Henry made their home, and raised their family in Waseca. Mary worked for 42 years in the banking industry. She started her career with Western Union, then worked for First National Bank of Waseca, Waseca Savings and Loan, and retired from Wells Fargo in 1992. She was a life time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and 62 year member of the Catholic Daughters-Court Sacred Heart #1424. In their younger years Mary and Henry enjoyed camping and family vacations. She also enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.
Mary is survived by her daughter Carol Sell, and her son Leo Spies, both of Waseca; by her grandchildren Jeremiah Sell, Bobby Sell, Eric (Kim) Spies and Adam Spies; by her great-grandchildren Kyra and Kalea Spies, and Jordan and Kayne Sell; by her son-in-law Frank Schoeb of Charlotte, NC; by her brother Joe (Maureen) Collins of Janesville and her sister-in-law Virginia Collins of Waseca; by nieces and nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Henry, on December 11, 2000; her daughter, Debra, on April 21, 2004; and her daughter-in-law, Sandra, on August 24, 2009; by her brothers Gerald, Francis, Leo, and Leonard at infancy; by her sister-in-law Jean Collins.

Mardy had been a resident at Sunrise Cottage of Mankato for the past 18 months. She was predeceased by her parents, the Reverend Harry W. Buck and Anna Mayer Buck, her sister Lucy Buck Lehman, her brother-in-law Ken Lehman, and her devoted friend, Dr. Jane Ann Roberts.
