Walter Shearer


Walter Lee Shearer, age 85, died on December 15, 2009, at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mankato.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009, at Mankato Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service at the funeral home on Saturday. Private family burial will be held at Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Mankato Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.

Walter was born on April 12, 1924, in Mankato to James Walter and Katherine (Doud) Shearer. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1942 and attended Mankato State College before entering the U. S. Army. Walter was united in marriage to Shirley Miller on June 16, 1945, in North Mankato. He worked briefly for Kato Engineering Co. and then was employed by Standard Oil Co. for 34 years as a credit representative in Mankato, Minneapolis and Kansas City. Walter retired in 1979 and then spent summers with his wife at Lake Francis. Walt and Shirley moved back to Mankato in 1994. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at German Lake and more currently a member at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Walter was also a member of the Mankato J.C.’s, Masonic Lodge #12, Elks Club, 30-40 Club, and the American Legion Post #311 in Elysian. He enjoyed the lake cabin, fishing, cooking and traveling.

Walter is survived by his wife; one son, James A. Shearer of Duluth; two daughters, Barbara (John) Westman of Eagle Lake, LeAnne (Fred) Erker of Olathe, KS; three grandsons, Daniel, Robert, William of Olathe, KS.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents.
