(VIDEO) Vikings notebook: Peterson puts ‘up a fight’ but heads to PUP list

MANKATO — On Thursday, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson said he hoped that he would be allowed to fully practice with the team as training camp began.

However, on Friday, Peterson was on the adjacent practice field, working out with a trainer after being placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list. That means Peterson will not be able to participate in team drills as he continues rehabilitation on his injured knee.

Peterson and coach Leslie Frazier discussed Peterson’s status during a meeting Thursday night.

“He put up a fight,” Frazier said. “He said, ‘Coach, don’t hold me back. Let me get out there.’ He wants to get out there, but we have to be smart.”

Peterson missed three-plus games with a sprained ankle last season, which eventually ended in Game 15 with a serious knee injury. Peterson’s rehab has been going well, but Peterson isn’t expected to play much in the preseason.

“It is what it is,” he said Friday. “I’ll have to make the most of it.”

Frazier said that Peterson would be evaluated daily to determine when he joins the rest of the team for practice.

Tight end Mickey Shuler (heel) and receiver Stephen Burton (toe) were placed on the non-football-injury list and will have to practice individually until cleared to return. Frazier said neither was expected to miss much time.

Harvin is happy

After causing commotion during minicamp by saying he was unhappy with the team, leading to speculation that he wanted to be traded or used differently, receiver Percy Harvin said he was ready to get started with a new season.

“I’m at camp, I’m happy,” Harvin said. “I’m on board, ready to get out there and start sweating.”

Harvin said that he has talked extensively with Frazier, whom he considers a father figure. Frazier said he feels close to Harvin, which dates back to a meeting he had with Harvin and his family shortly after being drafted.

“He’s a guy who’s very important to our team; he’s very important to me,” Frazier said. “We’ve always had a good relationship, and hopefully, that will continue.”

Under the radar

Defensive end Jared Allen said this is the first time he’s come to training camp without talk of playoff berths and Super Bowls from the media.

“That’s not a bad thing,” he said. “Our expectations are the same, which is to win the NFC North and get to the Super Bowl. But we were 3-13 last year and have a completely new team. We can just concentrate on playing football without any added pressure.”

Afternoon practice

Though the Vikings have switched their longest practice of the day from morning to afternoon, the 2-hour, 15-minute workout didn’t offer much more than the one-hour walkthrough in the morning.

Rookie cornerback Josh Robinson appeared to pull a hamstring muscle and didn’t return to practice.
