New Ulm's Ali Bernard loses Olympic wrestling match to Swede

Ali Bernard's Olympic experience ended quickly Thursday as she lost her opening match to Jenny Fransson of Sweden, then watched as Fransson was eliminated in the next round of the 72-kilogram class in women's wrestling.

Bernard, of New Ulm, lost 3-0, 3-1 to Fransson.

Stanka Zlateva of Bulgaria, a five-time world champion, then defeated Fransson 1-0, 1-0.

Bernard said Fransson did nothing that surprised her and placed the blame squarely on herself.

"I wasn't ready,'' Bernard said. "I have no excuses. I wrestled like crap.

"It was the first round, and I should have definitely gone after her. I showed her too much respect. But I can't go back now.''
