Soccer roundup: Fury reach state tourney
MANKATO — Brant Bogelsang and Jordan Franke scored one goal apiece to help the Mankato Fury defeat Buffalo 2-0 Thursday and clinch the U-17, Classic 2, West Division title in the boys soccer game at Thomas O. Anderson Fields.
The win gives Mankato an automatic berth in the state tournament beginning July 25.
Diego Lozano and Philip Weyhe each recorded an assist for Mankato. Goalkeeper Jace Leiferman made seven saves in the shutout.
The Fury end league play with a 7-2-1 record.
Mankato Galaxy 4, Fairmont 0
Jacqui Miller scored two goals to lead the Mankato Galaxy in a U-17, Classic 3 girls soccer game Thursday, shutting out Fairmont 4-0 at Land of Memories Park.
Kaitlyn Peters scored the Galaxy’s only first-half goal and finished with two assists. Teammate Deanna Brinks scored an unassisted goal. Jamie Wright was goalkeeper for Mankato (6-2-2), totaling nine saves.
With the win, the Galaxy earn the Southwest U-17, Classic 3 league title and an automatic trip to the state tournament, playing their first game July 26.
Prior Lake 2, Mankato Storm 0
Emily Wick made 17 saves for the Mankato Storm U-19 girls soccer team, but Prior Lake finished with two goals Thursday, nabbing a 2-0 victory and second place in the league, putting the Storm in third.
Ahead 1-0 at halftime, Prior Lake scored its second goal in the last few minutes of the game to strengthen the lead. Mankato (7-5) was outshot 19-9.
The Storm play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, taking on Swedish team Backnassas at Bethany Field.
U15 boys 4, Fairmont 1
Zach Fox scored two unassisted goals as the Mankato U15 boys defeated Fairmont at Mankato Thomas O. Anderson field,
Tracey Graves also scored twice, with one being assisted by Justin Gerber.
Mankato (4-4-2) plays in the Apple Valley tournament Saturday.
