MSU bowls over Augustana 52-14

MANKATO — Running back Andy Pfeiffer and quarterback Mitch Brozovich both scored a pair of rushing touchdowns Saturday as the Minnesota State football team steamrolled Augustana 52-14 in a North Sun Intercollegiate Conference game at Kirkeby-Over Stadium.

The 12th-ranked Mavericks built a 24-14 halftime lead and stayed comfortably ahead the rest of the way. MSU compiled 424 yards of total offense — including 262 on the ground while holding the Vikings to 278 total yards. The Mavericks allowed just 44 yards on the ground, marking the fourth straight game — and the fifth time this year — that they have limited their opponent to less than 100 yards of rushing offense.

Pfeiffer scored on runs of 4 and 1 yards while Brozovich reached the end zone from the 8 and the 7. Brozovich finished with 106 yards on 20 carries and Pfeiffer had 68 yards on 14 carries.

Brozovich was  10 for 14 passing for 162 yards. He threw one touchdown and one interception. Adam Thelen was his favorite target, hauling in seven passes for 96 yards. Teammate Kyle Riggott had two catches for 61 yards, including a 54-yard TD.

Quarterback Josh Hanson led the Augustana attack, completing 21 of 41 passes for 234 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The MSU defense was led by senior back Robert Gunderson who had five solo tackles and an assist. Safety Nathan Hancock added five tackles and linebacker Marcus Hall-Oliver added four stops and an interception which he returned 47 yards. Defensive back Earl Brooks added a 36-yard fumble recovery.

Minnesota State returns (6-0) hosts Southwest Minnesota State at 2 p.m. Saturday at Blakeslee Stadium.
