SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Ali Wilkinson’s converted a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining Friday to lift the Minnesota State women’s basketball team to an 80-79 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over fifth-ranked Augustana.
Wilkinson finished with a career-high 35 points as MSU gave the Vikings their first loss of the season. The win improves the Mavericks to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC.
Wilkinson grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and was 15 of 16 from the free-throw line. She finished the first half with 18 points and six rebounds.
Senior guard Jameila Hudnell, who was the only other Maverick to reach double figures, scored 12 points. Alli Hoefer had four assists and Jamie Bresnahan pulled down nine rebounds.
The Mavericks shot 38 percent (24 of 63) from the floor and 26 percent (5 of 19) from the free-throw line. MSU sizzled from the foul line, converting 27 of 32 attempts for 84 percent. The Maverick defense forced 19 turnovers.
Cami Koehn and Alex Feeney led Augustana (9-1, 5-1 in NSIC) with 15 points apiece. Augustana won the battle of the boards 44-36.
The Mavericks are back in action at 4 p.m. today with an NSIC game at Wayne State in Nebraska.
