Williams, Marei lead MSU men to victory

ST. CLOUD — Jarvis Williams scored 22 points, and Assem Marei had a double-double to lead the Minnesota State men’s basketball team to an 81-75 Northern Sun victory over St. Cloud State on Friday night.

Marei had 20 points and 12 rebounds, as well as three blocked shots.

The Mavericks had five players reach double-digit scoring totals. Zach Monaghan had 15 points and eight assists. Connor O’Brien had 11 points, and Gage Wooten had 10 points and seven rebounds. Williams also had seven rebounds.

Minnesota State got off to a quick start, leading 13-1 less than 3 minutes into the game. The Huskies tied the game at 15-15, but the Mavericks bounced back and led 38-30 at halftime.

MSU extended its lead to as much as 14 points in the second half, but again saw St. Cloud trim its deficit and even take a two-point lead with 3:57 to play.

But a 3-pointer by Monaghan and a dunk by Marei turned the tide late in the game.

St. Cloud State was led by Shaun Jensen and Damarius Cruz, each with 18 points.

The Mavericks (14-1, 10-1 in NSIC) will play today at Minnesota Duluth.
