Former Mavs Dilling, Rains come up short in Olympic bids

EUGENE, Ore. — A pair of former Minnesota State standout athletes have come up short in their bids to make the U.S. Olympic team.

Jim Dilling, perhaps the most heralded track and field athlete in MSU history, reached the finals of the U.S. Olympic Trials but missed his opening height of 7-feet-0 1/2 in Monday’s championship round of the high jump. Dilling was a four-time national champion while at MSU. He won the NCAA Division II Outdoor title in 2005 and 2007, along with the Division II Indoor title in ’06 and ’07.

The other former Maverick competing was pole vaulter Katelin Rains who missed her opening height of 13-11 3/4 at the trials. While at MSU, Rains was the NCAA Division II indoor national champion in ’07 and ’08, and the indoor and outdoor champion in ’09.

The top two finishers in both events qualified for the Olympic team.
