LAKE CRYSTAL —
When Cleveland junior Bryce Omtvedt realized his school would have fewer than 20 kids out for boys track this spring, he knew the Clippers would have a tough time being competitive. Thanks to a co-op with Mankato Loyola, Omtvedt and his teammates are doing just fine.
“I think it’s worked out really well,” Omtvedt said Thursday, shortly after running the final leg for the winning 4x800-meter relay team at Thursday’s Subsection 7, Section 2A Meet. “I really like the training we have to do. The coaches really know what they’re doing.”
Loyola/Cleveland head coach Dale Compton said the Crusaders have benefitted from Cleveland’s arrival just as much as the Clippers.
“It’s been a real good experience all around,” he said. “The student athletes from the two schools seem to get along well and everybody is supportive of one another.
“Bryce has been very consistent for us all year. He came in as a pretty successful middle-distance guy, and now we’re working him into the longer distances, too. He’s very eager to learn.”
Later in Thursday’s meet, Omtvedt rallied down the final stretch of the open 800 to pass LCWMN’s Stephen Bernau and win with a time of 2:06.47.
Omtvedt’s teammate Kevin Wagner won the long jump at 20-feet-7 and took the pole vault at 13-0. Both Crusaders joined with Chris Levandowski and Bryan Walters to take second in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:40.67.
In addition to Omtvedt and Wagner there were a number of other area athletes who had good days.
Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Matt Tessmer won both the 100-meter dash (11.41) and the 400-meter dash (53.14), and Jarrett Imlay from Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet won the 110 hurdles in 15.62. Imlay’s teammate, Nic Zalesky, captured both the shot put (46-3.5) and the discus throw (139-4), and the Knight Raiders’ Evan Guffey won the triple jump at 39-8.5.
LCWMN ended up having a strong day as it also won the 4x100 relay. The foursome of Nate Meixell, Jamie Fischer, Kyle Holbeck and Jake Bible turned in a time of 45.54. Bible also won the 200-meter dash in 24.78.
The Knight Raiders ended up second in Thursday’s meet with 203 points. Glencoe-Silver Lake was first (203) and Mankato Loyola was third (167.5).
The top four individuals and top two relays in each event now advance to the Section 2A ,eet which takes place Saturday, June 2, at Mankato West’s Todnem Field.
