ST. PAUL —
Taking second place at the state track and field meet is a great accomplishment, but for St. Clair senior thrower Ashley Thooft, it can be a bit of a letdown.
She set section records last weekend in the shot put and discus and had a great deal of confidence that she could win both events at the Class A Track and Field Meet at Hamline. However, she took second in the discus Friday, but she won the shot put Saturday at 43-feet-1 1/4.
“It feels really good,” said Thooft. “It took really good distances to win today, and I came through. It’s a good feeling after yesterday.”
Teammate Katelyn Weber also performed well in the same events, placing seventh in the shot put (39-5 1/2) after finishing seventh in the discus (125-4). The duo were St. Clair’s only participants in the state meet, but their high finishes helped the Cyclones place sixth in the team standings.
Blue Earth Area placed third in the team competition, led by senior Marissia Hagedorn and junior Krista Hassing.
Hagedorn finished her high school career by placing second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.11 and fifth in the pole vault at 10-3.
“I’m happy with it,” said Hagedorn. “I made it to the finals in all my events so I couldn’t ask for much more.”
Hassing contributed to one of the more thrilling finishes. She came on strong in the final 100 meters of the 800-meter run and nearly caught La Crescent’s Katie Shepardson. But she ended up second at 2:20.21, losing by .05.
Hassing anchored BEA’s 4x400 relay team of Taylor Grandgenett, Anne Franta and Karli Olsen to a second-place finish in 3:59.60.
“I’m just ecstatic,” said Hassing. “It was a hot day, and I wasn’t quite sure how I would do with the weather, but it worked out.”
St. Peter had a good showing with all-state honors in three events. Senior Kaitlin Kamm placed fourth in the 100 hurdles in 15.55. Freshman Logan Retzlaff took sixth in the 300-meter hurdles at 47.26. She combined with Katherine Schilling, Marta Springer and Sidney Dirks to place fourth in the 4x400 meter relay in 4:04.04
Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet’s Karina Schroeder placed second in the shot put behind Thooft with a heave of 43-3 3/4.
McKayla Stowell of LeSueur/Henderson had two high finishes. The freshman placed third in the 200 meter dash (26.04) and took fourth in the 100 meter dash (12.73).
Belle Plaine had a good showing as well, with the 4x200 relay team of Amara Meyer, Jenna Gatz, Jamie Read and Celeste Borchadt finishing fifth in 1:46.01. Shannon Egan, Jessica Weldon, Read and Borchardt combined to place sixth in the 4x100 at 50.60. Gatz also placed seventh in the 400-meter dash (59.15), and Janessa Meuleners crossed the line in seventh place in the 1,600 meter run (5:23.18).
Waseca’s quartet of Sadie Novak-Klug, Andee Erickson, Sally O’Brien and Aubrey Highum came in fourth in the 4x800 in 9:46.32, while Mankato Loyola⁄Cleveland’s 4x800 team of Katerina Vetter, Megan Henriksen, Mary Ninneman and Elizabeth Ninneman took 12th in 9:56.96.
In Class AA, Mankato West’s Rachel Gravley placed 17th in the triple jump with a leap of 34-5 3/4, a day after taking fourth in the long jump. Shelby Seifert of Mankato East finished in a tie for 13th in the pole vault at 10-0.
