ST. PAUL — Tommy Saffert broke the career scoring record at Bethany Lutheran College by scoring 15 points in an 89-73 loss to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Northwestern in men’s basketball Friday.
Saffert now has 1,170 points, breaking Alfonso Mayfield’s record of 1,162 points. Saffert made 4 of 10 3-pointers and dished out four assists. Stephone Frederick led the Vikings (5-14, 5-4 in UMAC) with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Deon Wright recorded 10 points and four assists. Derek Peterson scored nine points for Bethany. Trevor Bartelt had eight points, six rebounds and three steals.
Eric Garst led Northwestern (14-6, 8-1 in UMAC) with 20 points. Reid Berens had 18 points and nine rebounds.
BLC women
Anna Cepek had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings in a 66-56 loss to Northwestern in a UMAC game Friday in St. Paul.
Tracy Harris had nine points and nine rebounds for Bethany (8-12, 3-6 in UMAC). Caitlin Meyer scored nine points and snared six rebounds.
Casey Gudahl and Molly Erdman also scored nine points each for Bethany. Teammate Emily Schrupp had eight rebounds.
Katie DeWitt led Northwestern (12-7, 7-2 in UMAC) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Kaelee Kendrick recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds and teammate Allison Johnson had 12 rebounds and seven assists.
MLC men
Justin Danell totaled 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Martin Luther past Crown 84-79 in a UMAC game Friday at St. Bonafacius.
Nathan Bauer and Joshua Danell scored 11 points apiece for the Knights (5-13, 2-7 in UMAC). Greg Holzhueter had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Andrew Harrel led Crown (3-16, 3-6 in UMAC) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Inder Singh scored 14 points and made all four of his 3-pointers for the Storm.
MLC women
Sarah Free scored 15 points to lead Martin Luther past UMAC opponent Crown 58-30 in St. Bonafacius Friday.
Katherine Kogler scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Knights (7-12, 3-6 in UMAC). Erica Babinec had nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Brittany Jensen tallied seven rebounds and four steals. Emily Boldt recorded four blocked shots.
Judy Mundt led Crown (0-14, 0-9 in UMAC) with 16 points and seven rebounds.
