Mankato Twins score 19 in amateur baseball rout

MANKATO — Earlier this month, Jeremy Sudbeck was playing baseball in the NCAA Division II College World Series in Cary, N.C., as a member of the Minnesota State baseball team.

On Sunday, he proved that he didn’t leave everything on the East coast as he went 3 for 4 with a grand slam and six RBIs to propel the Mankato Twins to a 19-1 Southern Minny League amateur baseball win at Wolverton Field.

The Twins battered two Waseca pitchers for 17 hits while upping their record  to 6-1.

“I guess the high has worn off,” Sudbeck said of his CWS trip. “But it was a great way to get ready for the amateur season.

“I had one day off. We flew back on a Saturday and I played for the Twins in a doubleheader Sunday.”

Zach Rowles also had a good day for Mankato as the Twins fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first and then rallied for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rowles smacked a three-run double and a solo home run to finish with four RBIs.

Tony Konicek ended up 3 for 4 for the Twins with an RBI and three runs scored.

Todd Standish singled, walked and homered; Kevin Regan singled and doubled; Ryan Greene singled, doubled and had two RBIs; and Jovan Rodriguez homered, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

While the Mankato bats were having their way with Waseca starter Zach Hiller and reliever Eric Simmons, Twins’ pitchers Danny Miller, Rowles and Ben Kaus were shutting down the Braves’ lineup.

The left-handed Miller pitched the first five innings for the win, allowing one earned run on six hits, walking two and striking out one.

“I struggled a little bit controlling my change-up,” Miller said afterward. “But then I kind of figured out the strike zone and made the necessary adjustments. It’s not hard to pitch when you’re getting so much run support.”

Rowles pitched a sixth inning and Kaus tossed a scoreless seventh. The game was called after seven due to the 10-run rule.

Kelvin Nelson led the Braves’ attack, going 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Eric Balfe added two hits.

The Twins are back in action Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. game against Burnsville at Wolverton Field.
