ROCHESTER —
Trey Nielsen drove in four runs with a double and home run to pace the Mankato MoonDogs in an 11-6 victory over Rochester in a Northwoods League baseball game Monday.
The MoonDogs took advantage of two errors to score a pair of runs in the first inning, but Rochester belted a pair of home runs to take a 3-2 lead in the third.
Nielsen’s two-out, two-run double pushed the MoonDogs back on top in the fifth inning, and the lead grew to 5-3 on Chase Simpson’s RBI groundout in the sixth.
However, another two-run homer tied the score at 5 in the bottom of the sixth.
The MoonDogs broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning. Nielsen added a two-run homer, and Chase Simpson had an RBI single to highlight the rally. Dan Sheppard’s two-run homer pushed the gap to 11-5 in the eighth.
The MoonDogs had 17 hits, including at least one by every starter. Trever Allen collected four hits, and Nielsen and Simpson both had three.
Adam Mott was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs in six innings. He gave up nine hits with two strikeouts. Derek Howell pitched the final three innings to get the save.
The MoonDogs (15-5) host Duluth at 7:05 p.m. today.
