MANKATO —
MANKATO — Through eight minutes, the Minnesota State women's basketball team played even with Wayne State.
But maybe it was spent emotion and energy from Friday's overtime win over Augustana, or playing against the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's best defensive team, or maybe it was just an off night and flat effort.
From the 12-minute mark of the first half, Wayne State showed why it's the top team in the Northern Sun, rolling the Mavericks 83-45 Saturday at Bresnan Arena.
“We didn't play our best tonight, and when you play the best team in the conference and you don't play well, this is what can happen,” Minnesota State coach Pam Gohl said.
Aubrey Davis hit two 3-pointers and layup as the Mavericks stayed within 15-13 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. But over the next seven minutes, Wayne State made a 23-3 run that took any suspense out of the rest of the game.
“They're very tough inside, and they're tough outside,” senior Laura Weber said. “We need to work on taking it to (the opponent) more.”
Wayne State shot 66.7 percent in the first half and 55.0 percent in the second. The Wildcats outrebounded Minnesota State by 10.
The Mavericks only had consecutive baskets once in the second half as the lead never slipped under 25. Weber and Davis each finished with 10 points. The Mavericks shot only 28.8 percent, including 3 of 16 from 3-point range.
The Mavericks (14-7, 10-7) play their final road games of the regular season, starting Friday at St. Cloud State.
“Every game is so important,” Gohl said. “It's frustrating that we came out flat tonight, and we never were able to kick it in to gear and make a run. We'll do what we need to do to be better next weekend.”
