SPRINGFIELD, ILL. — The Minnesota State wrestling team competed in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Saturday and came away with a 1-2 record.
MSU lost 18-13 to eighth-ranked Findlay of Ohio and then dropped a 20-15 decision to No. 1-rated Nebraska-Kearney. The Mavericks edged UNC-Pembroke 19-18 by overtime criteria in their third dual.
Alphonso Vruno had a 14-5 major decision at 133 pounds to lead the Mavericks against Findlay. Thomas Allen (149), Cody Quinn (165) and Brendan Eichmann (174) also had wins for MSU.
The Mavericks trailed UN-Kearney 14-12 after 174 pounds but dropped two of the last three bouts to suffer the defeat.
Brendan Eichmann (174) had a pin at 174 to lead MSU. David Demo, Vruno and Nate Haynes had the other MSU wins.
Quinn and Haynes had technical falls against UNC-Pembroke.
MSU hosts a pair of conference foes this weekend, beginning with U-Mary on Friday and ending with Minot State on Saturday.
Women’s hockey: Emilia Andersson had a goal and two assists as the Mavericks edged Bemidji State 4-3 in overtime in a WCHA game Saturday in Bemidji.
MSU was up 3-0 entering the third period, but Bemidji State rallied to tie the score and force overtime. Lauren Zrust scored the game-winner for MSU just 2:55 into the extra frame. Lauren Barnes and Kari Lundberg scored the other two Maverick goals.
Kaitlyn Tougas had two of the Beavers’ three goals.
Danielle Butters stopped 36 BSU shots and Jessica Havel made 23 saves for the Beavers.
Men’s track: The Mavericks began the 2013 portion of their season with a strong showing at their own Alumni Open Saturday at Bud Myers Field House. Augustana, Waldorf and Northern State also competed in the event.
Among the individual winners for MSU were Devin Allbaugh in the 3,000-meter run (8:43.00); Joshua Mellman in the mile run (4:26.8); Jarrell Hancock in the 200-meter dash (21.79), Justin Wolf in the 60-meter hurdles (8.44); Nathan Hancock in the long jump (7.08 meters); Chris Reed in both the weight throw (16.56 meters) and hammer throw (17.12 meters); and Dan Novak in the pole vault (4.82 meters).
MSU competes at the Iowa State Open and the Minnesota Open Jan. 18-19.
Women’s track: The Mavericks joined Northern State, Augustana and Waldorf at the MSU Alumni Open Saturday at Bud Myers Field House.
The first-place finishers for MSU were Morgan Stampley in the weight throw (15.18 meters); Hannah Turnbull in the shot put (11.9 meters); Faryn Wirkus in the pole vault (3.42 meters); Samantha Soupir in the 3,000 meters (10:41.15); Bonnie Pickford in the 400 meters (1:00.43); Dedie Richemond in the 600 meters (1:36.80); and Mankato native Anna Veroeven in the long jump (11.45 meters).
The Mavericks compete at the Iowa State Open and the Minnesota Open Jan. 18-19.
