ST PETER —
Taylor Fish and Boyden Lee ripped three hits apiece and Grant Soderberg allowed just one earned run as Gustavus Adolphus knocked off conference-leading St. Thomas 9-3 Monday at the Gustavus baseball field. The Tommies came back to win the second game 7-0.
“They came in here undefeated in the conference and our intent to was to knock them off,” Gustavus head coach Mike Carroll said. “Grant pitched a great game and we got some big hits and were able to get it done.”
The Gusties took control early in the opener, rallying for four runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kellan Euerle ripped a triple to right-center. David Tranvik followed with an RBI double to cap the rally.
Tranvik added a two-run single in the fifth and Garrett Fuchs helped out with a run-scoring triple in the sixth. Fuchs and Tranvik finished with two hits apiece.
Soderberg pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven without walking a batter.
Game 2 was close until the Tommies broke it open with a six-run fifth inning. Ryan Gerger went 3 for 4 for St. Thomas with a double and two RBIs.
“Kellan pitched well for us but we made a couple of boots in the fifth inning and that’s all a good team needs to capitalize on,” Carroll said. “We gave them five outs in that inning.
“St. Thomas is in first place for a reason — they’re a good team. We gave them an opening and they scored some runs.”
Justin Novak, Nate Reichert and Jon Kinsel had two hits apiece for the Tommies. Left-hander Bryce Gapinski threw six shutout innings to get the win. He allowed five hits, fanned three and walked one.
“St. Thomas has four of five really good pitchers and Gapinski is one of them,” Carroll said. “He shut us down in the second game.”
Drew Block was the only multiple hitter for Gustavus, going 2 for 3.
“We had a lot of young guys playing today and I wanted to see how they handled it,” Carroll said. “Soderberg’s only a freshman and Euerle is just a sophomore so that’s encouraging.
“We really didn’t have anything to lose today but a lot of these guys are playing for next year. We’re finding out who wants to step up and who doesn’t.”
St. Thomas improves to 31-6 overall and 19-1 in the MIAC. Gustavus falls to 16-19 and 7-13.
The Gusties close out the season today with a 4:30 p.m. nonconference doubleheader at Martin Luther in New Ulm.
