High-flying Bluejays win Class A boys track and field title

Several area athletes coming home state champions

ST. PAUL — Waseca’s foursome of Leo Hoehn, Wolfgang Dvorak, Brock Kolander and Dylan Hermanstorfer had one goal during the season and that was to win a state championship in the 4x100-meter relay.

The group didn’t let a second-place disappointment in the 4x200 earlier deter them from their ultimate goal as they won the 4x100 in 43.89 seconds Saturday at the Class A Track and Field Championships at Hamline University in St. Paul.

For the quartet, it wasn’t the prettiest of victories, but they came out on top.

“The handoffs weren’t the smoothest,” said Kolander, “but the end result was all we care about.”

“Yesterday wasn’t our best effort (in the 4x200) so we were anxious today to get out there and get a victory,” Hoehn said.

Waseca’s other individual winner was Yves Spies in the high jump, taking the state title at 6-feet-7. He set a school record last week at the section meet at 6-8. After securing victory, he made an attempt at 6-9 but came up short.

“I was really, really close to 6-9,” said Spies. “My knee wasn’t working the best, but state champ, I’ll take that.”

Also performing well for the Bluejays was freshman distance runner Shane Streich. He was just edged by Blake’s Brandon Clark in the 1,600-meter run, coming in second at 4:20.26, and he also finished second in the 800-meter run in 1:58.51.

For Streich, he doesn’t care that freshmen aren’t supposed to compete at this high of a level.

“I usually surprise people when they know of my age,” he said. “But I know I can compete with these guys.”

Waseca won the team competition with 56 points, besting runner-up Foley by 10 points. Madelia-Truman finished eighth with 28 points.

Madelia-Truman’s 4x800-meter relay squad of Caleb Arndt, Leeroy Leal, Adam Cooling and Cade Ekstrom won the state championship in 7:58.14.

“We had a good section time,” said Ekstrom. “We wanted to get below eight minutes and get the win, and we did both today, which is great.”

Ekstrom, Cooling, Leal and DaMarko Thomas combined to finish fourth in the 4x400 at 3:26.76. Ekstrom also placed fourth in the 1,600 in 4:25.34, and Arndt took sixth in the 800 at 2:00.73.

A day after placing fourth in the triple jump, St. Peter’s Sean O’Connell helped his 4x200 team place fourth. He teamed with Keegan McCabe, Martin Johnson and Marcell Rowe-Swanson on a time of 1:32.48. O’Connell also placed eighth in the 100 meters (11.44) and 11th in the long jump (20-3).

Mankato Loyola/Cleveland’s 4x800 relay team of Wyatt Elmer, Grant Den Herder, Bryan Walters and Bryce Omtvedt finished seventh in 8:19.53. Kevin Wagner placed 13th in the long jump at 20-2.

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet’s foursome of Nate Meixell, Jamie Fischer, Kyle Holbeck and Evan Guffey placed seventh in the 4x100 in 44.72.

Le Sueur-Henderson’s Adam Schultz took sixth in the discus with a throw of 146-0.

In Class AA, Brody Ziegler was Mankato East’s top finisher coming in with a tie for sixth place in the high jump at 6-4. Taylor Hayenga took all-state honors for the second straight day, placing ninth in the discus at 152-9, and Ryan Erdman took ninth in the 800 in 1:57.64.
