MANKATO —
The Mankato West football team won’t have a winning record heading into the Section 2AAAAA playoffs later this month, but it’s possible that the four forfeits may not affect the seeding process.
The forfeits will always be part of the team’s record, but according to the Minnesota State High School League, when forfeits occur, it changes the seeding process and team strength when the playoffs begin should be considered.
Because the forfeits occurred during the regular season, the section coaches are required to meet after the regular season to set the pairings. The section coaches have scheduled their meeting for 7:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, at New Prague.
Section 2AAAAA uses the QRF formula developed by the website minnesota-scores.net to determine team strength, and West leads the section in QRF, ranked No. 11 in Class AAAAA
Because of the forfeits, West’s record is 0-5 with three games remaining in the regular season: at Rochester Mayo, home vs. Rochester Century and against Mankato East at Blakeslee Stadium. But the Scarlets will have the same roster when the playoffs begin as they had in those first four games, meaning their team strength at playoff time will be the same as the team strength when it was 4-0.
There are six teams in Section 2AAAAA; the top two will get byes and No. 6 will play at No. 3 and No. 4 hosts No. 5. The other teams in the section (in order of QRF) are Chanhassen (3-2), Chaska (3-2), New Prague (1-4), Waconia (1-4) and Northfield (0-5).
The first-round playoff games are Oct. 23..
