MoonDogs win in extra innings

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO —  — The Mankato MoonDogs picked up a much needed win on Wednesday, edging the Thunder Bay Border Cats 3-1 in 10 innings in a Northwoods League baseball game.

The MoonDogs, who had lost six straight games going into the contest, rallied in the 10th with a one-out single by pinch-hitter Audie Afenir.

Chad Christensen followed with another base hit before pinch-runner Trey Nielsen was caught trying to steal third for the second out.

Two pitches later, Chris Munoz smacked an RBI double and David Andriese followed with a run-scoring single to put the ’Dogs up 3-1.

Thunder Bay put their first two runners on in the bottom half of the inning but Matt Marsh came on in relief of Trevor Belicek to get a sacrifice out, a fly out and a ground out to end the game.

Christensen and Adam Wise had two hits apiece to lead Mankato.

Adam Mott pitched the first nine innings for the win, allowing one earned run on six hits, walking three and striking out one. Marsh got the save.

The MoonDogs (12-14) have a day off today and then play a 7:05 p.m. game Friday at Alexandria.
