Beetles sweep MoonDogs

ALEXANDRIA — The Mankato MoonDogs dropped a pair of Northwoods League baseball games to the Alexandria Beetles on Saturday, falling 5-2 in seven innings and, prior to that, 12-11 in game picked up from Friday night.

In the second game, the MoonDogs had eight hits to just four by Alexandria. However, Mankato left seven runners on base. The Beetles got two hits and four RBIs from Ryan Padilla.

The MoonDogs’ Chad Christensen went 2 for 2 with a double. Boomer Scarborough took the loss, allowing four hits and striking out five with two walks over 32⁄3 innings.

Earlier, the Beetles won on Matt Lowenstein’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, spoiling a comeback effort by the MoonDogs, who had a four-run top of the inning to tie the game at 11.

The teams combined for 23 runs on 29 hits and used 10 pitchers in the game, which was suspended by storms in the fourth inning on Friday with the MoonDogs leading 5-4. Alexandria later took the lead with a five-run seventh inning.

For Mankato, Christensen finished the game with two hits, including his fourth home run of the year. Kevin Corey also had two hits, including a homer.

Alex Wise, Cody Ferrell, Audie Afenir and Danny Murphy also had two hits each.

The MoonDogs (39-22) will wrap up a nine-day, eight-game road trip at 3:05 p.m. today in Alexandria. They will return to Mankato and host Duluth at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Franklin Rogers Park.
